Climate

As a large continent, Australia’s climate ranges from tropics in the north, to cooler regions in the south. Overall, however, the Australian climate is generally very pleasant and mild and is often very sunny. This is especially true for the major cities on the East Coast – Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Being part of the Southern Hemisphere, summer runs from December to February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August and spring from September to November. Within northern cities such as Cairns and Darwin, however, seasons are split into wet and dry seasons, with the heaviest rainfall occurring during the “summer” months.

Time Zones

Australia spans across three different time zones. These include:

  • Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) – UTC +10 hours in the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
  • Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) – UTC + 9½ hours in South Australia, Broken Hill in East New South Wales and the Northern Territory,
  • Australian Western Standard Time (AWST) – UTC + 8 hours, in the state of Western Australia.

Some Australian states and territories use daylight savings time from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. These regions that participate in daylight saving are the states of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania and the ACT. The regions that don’t are Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
